Continuing with our lighting tips to stage a house, today we are tackling a super cringey light fixture that seems to be everywhere!
We see the boob light all the time–sorry if that seems crass but, they really, really do look like lady parts–when we are staging houses to sell. Whether we are working with our Styling Evaluation clients or Vacant Staging projects, this light seems to be everywhere.
You know the ones….these lovelies…
I know they are inexpensive so that is why builders and rehabbers use them, but our team has seen them in million-dollar houses and I always scratch my head on that one.
Here's the deal, they really are meant to be changed out.
And if they are on your first floor or in a super important location, you may want to consider changing them out when you get ready to sell.
Buuuttttt... good-looking flushmount lighting (that's the lingo for these kinds of light and, I know, another hideous name) is hard to come by, especially on a budget. But don't worry, this girl has your back!
I have curated flushmount lighting that won't break the bank and will look soooo much better than a nipple on your ceiling!
Before you take a peek, though, here are a few more things that will improve the lighting emanating from these beauties that I have pulled together:
LOCATION
I prefer flushmount fixtures in small spaces like entries, bedrooms, closets, and even small hallways. They tend to leave shadows in the corner of a room if it is too large.
SIZE
To calculate the correct flush mount ceiling fixture width is super easy. Add together the length and width of your living room, say 20 + 14 = 34, and then divide in half = 17. If the fixture is a few inches smaller or larger, no worries, that should be fine.
DIMMER SWITCHES
Yep–I have dimmers on everything and love the flexibility.
BULBS
So often we are in houses where the light is super harsh and the whitest white I have ever seen. To not feel like you are living in a sterile laboratory, choose bulbs that are 2700-3000 Kelvin. You can find that number right on the box with the bulb in it. These give you a warm light that is much more pleasing and soothing.
Ok, now that you've got that under your belt, whether you are staging a house to sell or to dwell, you've got options. So, let's get on to the shopping!

And here are some if you are staying in place (aka a little more money ; )
Happy shopping!

Guilty! Although it doesn’t seem to bother most men, (in fact, as you suggested, my (male) contractor picked it out mostly due to budget restraints) it is def going to change once I put the house up for sale!

Haha! No worries, you are not alone and it’s ok. The first step to solving any problem is recognition that there is one ; )
