Right now a lot of people are going through their houses, organizing, cleaning, finding old photos and posting their graduation photos on Facebook to support the class of 2020. So fun and, no, you will not be seeing mine any time soon! Haha!
Anyway, all of that reminiscing has made me dive into my blog and look waaaaay back to when I first started blogging to see my evolution. And it's fascinating…
…so many of the concepts that I share today have been rooted in the background of my business for years and I didn't even realize it! I guess that's why journaling–which blogging really is–can be such a powerful tool.
As many of you know, I have been deeply inspired by the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. His thoughts and review of research on habit creation to drive motivation via incremental behavior change lit my brain up the first time I read it. It all made so much sense! And it still does as I examine so many things that I do and don't do in my life on a daily basis.
So today, when I decided to go peek in on the very start of my blogging journey, I found this post–the third one that I ever created. This list (title and all) was posted here on March 28, 2013:
Staging Micro-Goals
- Clean out and organize a linen closet
- Clean out and organize a medicine chest
- Clean out and organize under the bathroom sink
- Clean out and organize 3 cupboards in the kitchen
- Clean off and style a bookcase
- Clear the tops of kitchen cabinets (no faux plants or any accessories, promise me!!)
- Take all magnets off of refrigerator
- Remove all throw rugs and toilet seat covers in bathrooms (please don't put toilet seat covers or those toilet rug thingies back on–they are really nasty and super unattractive)
- Clean out and organize the shoes in your closet
- Clear off your bedside tables leaving only lamps and an alarm clock
- Straighten up your mudroom
- Clean up the laundry room/area
- Clean out and reorganize the steps to the basement
- Organize one section of the garageBuy and plant seasonal planters for your front entry
- Find a place to store all of your mail, school notices, etc out of site for photos and showings
- Buy moving labels, boxes, etc to be ready when you start packing as you stage
- Pack up 1 box full of your collection of _____(fill in the blank)
First, I love that I just posted this list without an ounce of explanation.
Second, there is so much I would change about this list. Today, I would never write that something is nasty (even if I felt that way!). I have definitely become more nuanced in my communications ; ) And of course, I would recommend that you let your camera be your guide to staging your spaces.
Third, I would likely share my favorite organizing tools with you (and I will below!)
But fourth….long before James Clear entered my life, I was talking about micro-goals for home staging. I somehow knew even back then that in order to tackle a big project, you sometimes need to start with the small ones.
And even then, I knew that the only way to get good at something was to start by just trying. Just like that blog post.
So to that end….what small projects can you tackle this week, what mini-habits can you create, what micro-actions can you put in place, what can you make a messy effort at to set your future self up for success?
xo,
Lori
