As we dive into what your home staging business needs to be focusing on, you know I want to be talking about area rugs, focal points and all the pretty things right now! But, our businesses call for so much more than that and I feel so compelled to bring you on the journey to your inner CEO.
In our businesses, we have split responsibilities, right? In the beginning and even well into our business growth, we are the doer or employee (aka Lead Stager). I still fill that role for certain clients and projects so I don't want you to think that I am asking you to step out of being a stager in your business.
But we also have to hold space to do the work of building a business. And, if we neglect to focus on some pretty key things each week and only focus on being the employee in our businesses, we will struggle with business growth.
Top Elements Your Home Staging Business Needs You to Focus On
Schedule Your CEO Time
The first thing we need to do is schedule time each week to only be the CEO of our business. This isn't time for networking, writing social media or organizing your inventory. It is strictly time for you to review some key metrics in your business. Even if you are an organizational chart of one person, you should be setting aside this time every week. Once a month is not enough and you will see why in a minute ; )
Action Step 1: Put an appointment on your calendar for 1 hour that repeats on the same day and same time each week to CEO the heck out of your business right now…go ahead…I'll wait…
Positive Focus
Each week, my leadership team and I have a Team Huddle. In this time we review some key things that keep us on track and I want you to start looking at these things for your business. We based this meeting off of the fabulous book Traction by Geno Wickman. If you don't have it...go grab it here to learn more about this kind of meeting and it's importance to your biz.
First we celebrate! As entrepreneurs we don't spend enough time celebrating our successes. This can make it challenging to stay motivated if we are always looking at what we don't have. You are doing something most people will never do. You are creating something from nothing. You are betting on yourself. Be your biggest cheerleader because you are a bold, incredible, resilient, adventurous soul!
Action Step 2: Look back at the previous week and acknowledge the wins no matter how small. Did you take the steps you said you would to accomplish a goal? Did you land your first gig with a new client? Did a client sell super fast? Share a weekly win with me in the comments!
Get All Up In Your Business's Junk : )
Next up in the Team Huddle we review what is called the RHI Scorecard. The Scorecard consists of three key areas. Revenue, Networking, Leads/Prospects/Repeat Clients. Here is what we measure in those areas:
Revenue
- Our revenue goal for the week based on our 90-day revenue goal
- The number of each service we provided that week
- The revenue we actually brought in for the week
Networking
- Number of networking and speaking events
- Number of coffee dates
- Number of touches to past referral partners
Leads/Prospects
- How did business come to us (phone, email, contact from website, etc)
- How many new and repeat clients we had
Quarterly Rocks Review
What are rocks, you may ask? Well, rocks are the BIG things you want to focus on for the quarter. My business coach, Tobi Fairley, believes that we should focus on one big thing at a time and I have come to see the wisdom in this. As much as I want to focus on all of the things, it isn't realistic and it makes everything take longer if everything is being worked on at once.
So what constitutes a rock? It could be onboarding a new team member, creating a lead magnet, setting up an email list and the nurture sequences that go out to them, starting to blog weekly, booking X number of presentations, implementing new systems or a new inventory management program.
Why should you look at these each week if it's just you? Because it's sooo easy to go off track and find yourself during the week going down a path that you hadn't intended. By looking at the quarterly rocks, you can map out the small steps that will get you there and then focus on getting through those steps.
Action Step 3: Create one BIG Rock for the next 90 Days and then start brainstorming all of the steps you will need to get you there and put those steps on your calendar.
Issues Review
Each week, we dive into any issues that have arisen during the week. What are the pinch points, bottlenecks and just flat out stuff that isn't working for us to create a business that we love working in each day. This is huge! This helps us to head things off quickly before they become bigger issues and it helps us to dive in early to see the true cause of the issue. Is it a people, process or tools issue. Is it a messaging issue so we aren't getting the right kind of inquiries? Is it capacity? Do we have a system that needs to be tweaked? All of this is so much easier to handle if we have a culture of uncovering issues and working to fix them.
Action Step 4: Think about anything that might have come up during the week that you see as an issue. What might you be able to do or implement to take that from issue to resolved.
To-Do's
This is our list of items that we can and will accomplish in 7 days. This is awesome to override our brains desire to keep us confused, small and off track. Can't do that if you have written out what things you want to accomplish by the next time you CEO.
Action Step 5: Write a list of what you want to accomplish over the next 7 days and then schedule it in your calendar (don't skip this step!!!!)!
