If you want to improve how you market your staging business, then welcome to another chapter of “Lori Made Allll The Mistakes So You Don't Have To”!
Now in fairness to me…
I started my business at a time when I really wasn't clear on what a blog was, Instagram didn't exist, and the link between real world, zip code based, service businesses and digital marketing was a bit foreign.
So, these “mistakes” may have been more of a sign of the times. But, I do still see big opportunities to educate home staging business owners about how to market their businesses in 2022.
We no longer should spend time putting together cute little gifts with our business cards attached to drop off at real estate offices. While that is a lovely thing to do for clients who work with you on a regular basis, that is not the kind of thing you should be doing to get new clients.
So let's dive into the biggest mistakes I see in marketing staging businesses today.
Successfully market your staging business by avoiding these top mistakes.
1. Not Meeting Enough Humans
To get any business off the ground you must do three very simple things:
- Meet people (in person and/or online)
- Tell them you are a real estate stager
- Tell them how you help
And you have to do this consistently and over and over. I was in a weekly 7 a.m. networking group with a very strict attendance policy for 6 years. It was worth every weekly 5:30 a.m. wake up as I sit with a thriving business today. Did I question was it worth my investment of time and money at certain points? Yep! Did I keep investing in spite of that? Yep! Today, 90% of my clients I can attribute to the time I invested in that networking group.
You cannot hide–there are sellers out there who need you!
In-person networking, emailing and posting on social media will feel like it's not working at all. But trust me, what is happening inside you as you talk about and share what you do, two things happen:
- You get better at communicating your value and
- You become the biggest cheerleader for your service and the way you help people.
Those two things are irresistible and energetically begin to draw more clients to you.
Here are some ideas (I'd focus on networking or presenting (in person) and email along wih one social media platform (digital) in the beginning):
- Networking
- Zoom or in-person coffee date
- Speaking/Presenting
- Hosting an event
- IG, Facebook (post, story, reel, video recorded or live)
- Youtube (recorded or live)
- Webinar
2. Not Creating A System To Stay In Touch
This was my big shortcoming in the beginning of my business. I was so lucky to work with an online marketer to build my website and my initial marketing strategy to grow an email list and email those people weekly.
Brilliant, right?
Except for one thing.
I didn't understand how any of that could work for my business and I quickly lost faith and the will to send out weekly emails. I also didn't know how to transition my real world connections over to my email list.
Until I did.
It can be as simple as just asking people or you can get a little fancier with the strategy I share here.
Either way…
Email is still one of the best ways to stay in touch with your prospective clients regularly. Even better, you can create a weekly habit to stay in touch in all kinds of ways like I break down here. I'll be diving into the importance of digital marketing deeper inside the upcoming FREE Masterclass “3 Simple Ways To Make More Money In Your Staging Business”
3. Not Sticking With It, Even If
This is a big one! And as you can see from my email story, I was not immune to giving up. It isn't always going to feel easy and life and a growing business will get in the way. But that doesn't mean you derail yourself and marketing your business and completely stop. It's not unlike anything you want to get good at. As long as you have more days where your actions align with the result you want, the more likely the result will happen.
You've got this! Keep going!!
xo,
Lori
