Today is all about empowering you to become a super successful home staging business owner and the 3 decisions you need to make when designing your profitable home staging business. Let's dive in!
Many of us start our home staging businesses, thinking of ourselves as the employee (aka Principle Stager) in our business, not the CEO. No shame! I'm gonna include myself in that. I only envisioned staging like the HGTV shows I watched which, of course, never included them going to networking meetings or hearing their pricing was too expensive!
But, as you may have quickly learned, there is so much more to operating a profitable home staging business than creating focal points and styling coffee tables. And that is where so many of us can get stuck.
We started our home staging businesses because we loved styling, not because we loved setting pricing, marketing, sales, and networking. Yet those are the things that will help us put more of our gifts into the world! I personally didn't know a thing about lead generation, nurturing prospects, scalability, and systems so I had to learn all of that as I grew. Pretty painful!
I want to help you avoid the pain I felt–and the time I wasted–by giving you the tools you need to be forward thinking in your home staging business.
There were a few key things, that really helped me begin to see growth and profitability in my home staging business and I'm dusting them off for you here….
Decision #1 | What Services Will You Offer
Ok, I realize this question might seem to have an obvious answer but it's not as straightforward as it sounds. In the beginning of your business, there is a lot of trial and error. A kind of feeling out. What works for you, what doesn't work for you. And, believe it or not, this a very vulnerable time for a new–and even new'ish–business.
You haven't quite dialed in on what home staging services look like for your business so you could be inclined to agree to doing all kinds of things because prospective clients are asking and you want to book business.
This could have you creating services that aren't easy to deliver and don't make enough money to support a business. And that right there is one of the key things you need to consider when creating your services. What will this service look like in the future when your business grows and you hire another stager.
The services you create should be scalable, repeatable and profitable.
In my RethinkYou Mentorship Program, I spend a lot of time teaching about how to be forward-thinking to a time when it isn't just you as the employee. Trust me, this will happen faster than you think because there's only so much of you to go around! And you want to be ready with services and pricing that are simple to deliver, easy to teach and priced to make a profit when you have to pay someone else to do them. This is so important that in the FREE Profitable Staging Business Starter Kit I created, I give you several more strategies and questions to think about to help you figure out what services you will offer. Nice!
Decision #2 | What Are You Going To Give Away For Free
Wait, what? Yep. F R E E! And, to be clear, I'm not talking about your services. I would never advocate for giving your services away for free. Like no free consultations. Ever.
But, your profitable home staging business depends on your ability to stay in touch with prospective clients. The challenge is you've got a locally based business in a digital marketing world. So how do you bridge that gap?
Your free lead magnet (aka freebie, irresistible free offer).
Your free lead magnet is the gateway to staying in touch long after that networking event or presentation or coffee meeting. It is truly the most effective marketing tool you have. Throw out the brochures! Kidding. Don't! But don't rely on brochures to build your business. You need a free lead magnet.
Inside my Profitable Staging Business Starter Kit, I share exactly what a lead magnet is, how you can use it to grow your profitable home staging business, and a worksheet to help you start creating yours!
Decision #3 | What Are You Going To Stop Doing In Your Home Staging Business
I'm sure you're thinking, “I'm only just starting and I already have to think about stopping?!”.
Yep! As you grow your business you will learn that no one will have your back better than yourself. You could work 24/7 unless you take care of you and what you need. And, to be a conscious CEO, you will want to be thinking about boundaries for you and your team as you grow. So in the spirit of forward-thinking about your home staging business growth, you will want to be mindful of your boundaries from the very beginning.
Boundaries and non-negotiables will start to come up super early in your business. I remember my first one was that I don't work on weekends. We had a young, busy family when I started my business and I was not willing to not have time with my kiddos and husband and I was not willing to miss their weekend activities.
The boundaries we set will be unique to each one of us. There is no right or wrong. The key for you is to understand that you create the boundaries for your business, not your clients.
So what are your non-negotiable lines in the sand?
